“As well as encouraging young people to develop their drawing skills, the competition raises awareness of disability, muscular dystrophy and also promotes the exploration of important environmental issues.”
As part of the Cookham Festival ( then known as the Trinity festival) I organised a pavement art day. Of course it would be raining-so hastily, fishing umbrellas and gazebos were erected on the pavement outside the shops in Cookham Rise. Gradually a trickle of young artists appeared and all was not lost. The theme of the day was parks and gardens and our winning entries were sent up to the Muscular Dystrophy societies’ fund-raising annual competition. Despite the rain, the chalk drawings lasted several weeks and were much admired.
To draw on the pavement like this by the way you must seek permission from the land owners and gain the co-operation of the local shop keepers. My thanks to them for their support - and umbrellas!
I wanted to get as many young people involved in the day as possible and invited pupils from Holyport Manor School to produce the publicity banner. My thanks to Christine Richards their teacher. Holyport Manor is a special needs school.
